Peter and the Wolf
Sunday October 12th 4pm
The LA County Arboretum – Ayers Hall
On Sunday October 12th, Melodia Mariposa presented a wonderful concert for all the family to a hall full of kids of all ages.
Written in 1936 by the Russian composer Prokofiev, Peter and the Wolf it is a “symphonic tale for children”. The narrator tells a Russian folk tale which the orchestra illustrates by using different instruments to play themes that represents each character in the story.
Conductor David Cubek started the concert by explaining the different groups of instruments in the Orchestra. The Strings, Woodwind, Brass and Percussion all stood and were cheered by the crowd. Then David explained which instrument represented which charachter in the story. The audience cheered for Peter and the strings and booed for the Wolf – represented by three very villianous French horns! After a quiz confirmed that the children present knew exactly which instrument and animal was which, the performance began.
Our narrator, Tessie Prakas, told the story of Peter, his disapproving grandfather and the terrible wolf who ate birds, escaped death and ended up in the zoo.
Melodia Mariposa really enjoyed putting on this very special performance and plans to create another family musical experience next year!
We want to thank the staff of the Arboretum for their amazing support of this event: Tim, Nadia, Elizabeth, Angela, Nancy, the security guys, the ticket office – everyone was wonderful.
This performance was supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Arts and Culture.
